Baltic 21 brings 21 actions on sustainable development to the table

 

The Baltic 21 establishes four Working Groups and two Lighthouse Projects to promote sustainable actions in the Baltic Sea Region.

Baltic 21 takes concrete steps towards realising a common vision of a Baltic Sea Eco-Region. The Senior Officials Group (SOG) of Baltic 21 adopts its Triennial Report 2003-2005.

7 November

The Baltic 21 Senior Official Group has approved two new Lighthouse Project candidates aimed at demonstrating how sustainable development can be brought about in practice. These are (i) the “Baltic Forest” Project that will improve the economic, ecological and social optimization of the forest sector, as well as a broadened awareness and implementation of current knowledge, and have a substantial and durable impact on management of the forest resources, and (ii) the “A.S.A.P.” Project that will promote the efficient Administrative Structures as a Prerequisite for Successful Economic and Social Development of Rural Areas in Demographic Transition.

Having reviewed progress towards sustainable development in the Baltic Sea Region, in its report to Prime Ministers Baltic 21 stresses that further efforts are warranted. Baltic 21 proposes that the Baltic Sea Region would become an "Eco-Region" - where "Eco" stands for both "Economy" and "Ecology" and where the Social dimension is strongly integrated. Baltic 21 is prepared and committed to contribute to achieving this through its new line of action.

6 April A New Strategy for Baltic 21 is proposed to be endorsed by the Prime Ministers of the Baltic Sea States at the Baltic Sea States Summit in Estonia, 21 June 2004. At the same time, to improve communication and visibility Baltic 21 launches its new web site.

Baltic 21 developing its future policy and strategy: Senior officials met on 23-24 October 2003 in Stralsund, Germany at the invitation of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety

Web-based version of the "Baltic 21 Report 2000-2002: Towards Sustainable Development in the Baltic Sea Region" is launched on the day when the Environment Ministers of the Council of the Baltic Sea States are meeting in Luleå, Sweden

"Baltic 21 Report 2000-2002: Towards Sustainable Development in the Baltic Sea Region" describes region's advancement towards sustainable development and reveals progress in the work of Baltic 21

Baltic 21 contributed to the 5th Pan-European Conference of Environment Ministers "Environment for Europe"

Senior officials met on 24-25 April, hosted by the City of Turku, Finland, at the invitation of the Union of the Baltic Cities

Baltic 21 took part in the Meeting of Ministers of Energy of the Council of the Baltic Sea States and the European Commission
