BALTIC 21 SECTORS AND SPATIAL PLANNING

Education Sector

We are committed to education for sustainable development and building peoples’ capacities to address environmental, social, cultural and economic opportunities. Providing people with practical training and knowledge makes it possible for us all to make choices that can enhance our well-being, as well as the well-being of future generations.

Introduction

Initiated in 2000 by the Ministers of Education of the 11 Baltic Sea states, the Baltic 21 Education Sector is a platform for multi-stakeholder cooperation on education for sustainable development. Our Sector brings together experts from national ministries and agencies, academic institutions, international and regional organisations, NGOs, local networks and more. Together, we coordinate goals and activities across national borders and work to integrate education for sustainability into other sectors. The Education Sector is coordinated by a Baltic 21 Education Sector Co-ordinating Group (BA21ESCG). Lead Party to the Sector is Norway.

The Goals

Our central goal is to ensure that people in the Baltic Sea Region have the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values needed to contribute actively towards sustainable development. Taking an integrated and holistic approach to this process, we aim to support teachers, learners and policy makers in building their competencies. By serving as a forum for discussion and cooperation on education issues, we endeavor to increase peoples’ understanding of education for regional sustainability and their ability to participate in it.

Action Programme

The emphasis of the Baltic 21 Education sector programme is on strengthening the capacity of knowledge building. The Action Programme for the Education Sector is divided into a framework of action areas, which are common to the whole sector:

  • Policies and strategies - includes the development of education of sustainable development guidelines and promotion of international co-operation for curricula, program and course development at all levels of education;
  • Competence development within the education sector including actions to increase the awareness of sustainable development issues among officials, principals and staff, to support co-operation in BSR between educators, researchers and practitioners to promote knowledge and skills in education for sustainable development;
  • Continuing education which include sustainability related knowledge and skills;
  • Teaching and learning resources such as stimulate the production of education for sustainable development material for schools, higher education and training;
  • Research on and development of education for sustainable development as well as stimulate the dissemination of results of research on issues concerning.
In addition to our main activities, we are also currently involved in developing a strategic project on implementing the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development. With this project, we hope to activate regional and local learning arenas to increase peoples’ capacities to move sustainable development forward.
